| How Does the Qur’an Reveal the Reality of Worldly Life and Its Temporary Attractions?

Worldly Life: Between Beauty and Reality

Worldly life attracts people through its pleasures and outward beauty. A person may become occupied with earning money, achieving success, and seeking social recognition. Amid these distractions, it is easy to forget that this life is temporary and that a person’s worth is not measured by possessions alone, but also by faith, righteous deeds, and the way Allah’s blessings are used.

| How Does the Qur’an Describe Worldly Life?

Allah says:

“Know that the life of this world is but play, amusement, adornment, boasting among yourselves, and competition in wealth and children.”

Qur’an 57:20 — Surah Al-Hadid.

This passage is part of verse 20 of Surah Al-Hadid. The verse explains how worldly attractions can occupy people’s attention, leading them to boast and compete over possessions and status. It does not mean that wealth or enjoying blessings is inherently wrong; rather, it warns against making these things the ultimate goal and allowing them to distract us from remembering Allah and preparing for the Hereafter.

Worldly Beauty Does Not Last

In the same verse, Allah describes vegetation that grows after rainfall and impresses people with its beauty, only to wither and become scattered remnants. This image reminds us that worldly circumstances change and that beauty, strength, and prosperity do not remain unchanged forever.

This does not mean that we should reject worldly blessings or neglect our responsibilities. Wealth, health, family, and other blessings deserve gratitude. We should use them in ways that please Allah, remain humble, and avoid allowing them to make us neglect the rights of others or our religious and moral duties.

| How Can We Balance This Life and the Hereafter?

Islam encourages us to seek lawful provision, pursue knowledge, and do beneficial work while maintaining our relationship with Allah and fulfilling the rights of others. A believer strives for success in life while remembering that success is not limited to material achievements; it also includes righteous deeds and good character.

We can put this teaching into practice by thanking Allah for His blessings, avoiding boastfulness, helping those in need, using our time wisely, and practising honesty, justice, and kindness in our daily interactions.

| What Remains When Appearances Fade?

A person’s circumstances may change, possessions may be lost, and social status may fade. Yet the good we do can leave a positive impact on others. Wisdom therefore calls us not to measure success solely by wealth or admiration, but also to care for our hearts and actions.

Remembering that worldly life is temporary does not call us to sadness or pessimism. Instead, it helps us live with awareness and balance, thank Allah for His blessings, pursue good, and prepare for the Hereafter through righteous deeds.

A Supplication

O Allah, grant us grateful hearts and righteous deeds. Help us use Your blessings in ways that please You, and do not let worldly life distract us from remembering You and preparing to meet You.

A Final Reflection

The true measure is not how much we possess, but how we use what we have, the good we offer, and how sincerely we seek Allah’s pleasure. Let us enjoy worldly blessings with gratitude and humility, making them a means of goodness rather than a cause of heedlessness.
