| When We Are Tested Through What We Love: Understanding Trials Through the Quran and Sunnah
Introduction
English:
A person may face unexpected circumstances that change their life. They may fear for someone dear to them, lose something they had hoped for, or encounter difficulties they never chose. In such moments, they may wonder: Why is this happening to me? How can I continue living while carrying so much pain? Trials are part of the reality of life described in the Quran. We should not regard hardship alone as proof that Allah’s mercy is distant. During difficult times, believers need patience, trust in Allah, and practical steps to help them navigate their struggles.
First: Trials Are Part of Life
English:
Allah says:
“Indeed, We have created humankind in hardship.” (Quran 90:4).
This verse reminds us that human life involves difficulty and struggle, and that this world is not a place of uninterrupted comfort. Some days bring happiness, while others bring responsibilities, fears, or sorrow. This does not mean that we should surrender to despair. Rather, we should face life’s challenges with patience, seek Allah’s help during hardship, and continue pursuing what is good even when things do not go as we wish.
Second: When We Fear Losing What We Love
English:
People become deeply attached to their families, health, livelihoods, and dreams. They may feel afraid when they face the possibility of losing one of these blessings. Allah explains that trials may involve fear, hunger, and the loss of wealth and lives. He says:
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” (Quran 2:155).
This verse teaches us that people may experience different forms of hardship and that patience is among the greatest qualities that help them face such challenges. We cannot claim to know the precise wisdom behind every trial, but we can hold on to hope in Allah’s mercy, maintain good expectations of Him, and pray for relief and protection for those we love.
Third: Grief Does Not Contradict Patience
English:
Some people mistakenly believe that patience means never crying or feeling sad. However, grief is a human emotion that does not contradict faith. Allah describes the sorrow of Prophet Yaqub (Jacob), peace be upon him, over his son Yusuf (Joseph), saying:
“And his eyes became white from grief, and he was filled with suppressed sorrow.” (Quran 12:84).
Crying is not necessarily an objection to Allah’s decree, and feeling pain does not mean that faith is weak. Patience means avoiding resentment toward Allah, striving to do what pleases Him, and never despairing of His mercy. People may express their grief and seek support from trusted family members and friends; they do not have to face their pain alone.
Fourth: Patience Goes Hand in Hand With Action
English:
When someone faces illness, financial hardship, or a family problem, patience does not mean giving up. Instead, it means combining prayer with action: seeking medical treatment when ill, pursuing lawful means of earning a living, and looking for appropriate solutions to problems. Reliance on Allah does not mean abandoning practical efforts. It means trusting Him while doing everything reasonably possible to improve one’s circumstances.
| Fifth: How Can We Face Hardship Without Losing Hope?
English:
When hardship intensifies, a person may feel that their worries have become more than they can bear. During such moments, it helps to take things one step at a time, maintain acts of worship as much as possible, and seek help when needed. It is also helpful to remember the blessings that remain in life without minimizing the pain being experienced. Hope does not mean denying suffering; it means believing that it is possible to move through it, even if doing so takes time.
Sixth: With Hardship Comes Ease
English:
Allah says:
“For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (Quran 94:5–6).
These verses open the door to hope and remind believers that hardship is not the whole story. Relief may come through the resolution of a problem, unexpected support, or the strength to continue moving forward. Solutions may not appear immediately, but we should not judge our entire future by the pain of the present moment. Hope in Allah can give the heart the strength to keep striving and praying.
Seventh: A Prophetic Supplication During Distress
English:
Among the supplications the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite during distress is the following narration from Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both:
“There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.”
Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
A Muslim may recite this supplication during difficult times and ask Allah to relieve distress, make matters easier, and protect loved ones. Supplication is an act of worship through which a servant turns to their Lord, combining prayer with patience and practical effort while hoping for Allah’s mercy and generosity.
Conclusion
English:
If you are tested through something you love, do not be harsh with yourself for feeling sad, and do not assume that your tears mean you have lost patience. Give your heart time, seek Allah’s help, ask for support when you need it, and continue striving for good. You may not understand the wisdom behind everything you experience, but you can face each day with faith and hope, remembering that Allah’s mercy is vast and that the door of supplication is always open. Let your trust in Allah inspire patience and action rather than surrender to despair.
