La Hawla Wa La Quwwata Illa Billah: A Powerful Remembrance of Allah
There are some phrases of remembrance that are short on the tongue but carry profound meanings in the life of a believer.
One of the greatest is:
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
It reminds us of an important truth: no matter how capable a person may be, we always need Allah’s help and guidance.
A person may plan, work hard, and take the necessary steps, but nothing happens except by Allah’s permission. Saying “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” reminds the heart of human weakness and acknowledges the absolute power of Allah.
What Does La Hawla Wa La Quwwata Illa Billah Mean?
It means that a servant has no independent power or ability to change from one state to another or accomplish something without Allah’s help and guidance.
The abilities we have are blessings from Allah. Our health, intellect, ability to worship, work, learn, and strive are all blessings from Him.
This remembrance teaches the heart not to depend completely upon itself, but to seek Allah’s help while still taking the proper means.
A Muslim does not abandon effort in the name of reliance upon Allah, nor does he depend entirely upon worldly means. Instead, he works, makes an effort, and relies upon Allah for the outcome.
Why Is This Remembrance So Great?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari:
“Shall I not guide you to a treasure from the treasures of Paradise?”
He replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Think about the beauty of this description: a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.
These words are easy to say, yet they carry a profound meaning about our dependence upon Allah and our need for His help.
A Reminder of Our Need for Allah
In everyday life, we may sometimes feel that we are capable of handling everything, especially when things are going well.
But no matter how strong or successful a person becomes, he remains a servant who needs his Lord.
We may make plans and then see circumstances change.
We may begin something and need Allah’s help to complete it.
We may want to do good but need strength and steadfastness to continue.
We may know the right path but need guidance and support to remain upon it.
The meaning of “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” reminds the heart that we can never become independent of our Lord.
Saying It When We Feel Weak
When a person feels unable to deal with something, this remembrance can remind him that his strength is not independent of Allah.
Instead of surrendering to weakness, he turns to Allah for help and then takes whatever reasonable steps he can.
The remembrance does not mean that we stop trying. Rather, it teaches us where true strength comes from and encourages us to seek Allah’s help in everything we do.
La Hawla Wa La Quwwata Illa Billah and Reliance Upon Allah
True reliance upon Allah combines two things:
Taking the means and relying upon Allah.
A Muslim works, learns, plans, seeks treatment when needed, earns a living, and does what he can. At the same time, he knows that the means themselves do not operate independently of Allah’s will.
This is one of the beautiful meanings we can remember when saying “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
A Remembrance That Teaches Humility
A person may succeed in his work, achieve a goal, or gain knowledge and begin to feel proud of his own abilities.
But a believer remembers that every blessing comes from Allah.
Allah says:
“And whatever blessing you have is from Allah.”
[Quran 16:53]
Therefore, “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” reminds us that our strength, health, knowledge, and ability to work are all blessings from Allah.
How Can We Make This Remembrance Part of Our Lives?
A Muslim can remember Allah throughout the day, including by saying “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
It can be said during everyday activities, when moving from one task to another, when seeking Allah’s help, or whenever we remember His greatness and power.
Most importantly, the heart should understand the meaning behind the words.
When you say:
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,”
remember that you are a servant of Allah, that you need His help, and that every ability you possess is a blessing from Him.
Reliance Does Not Mean Giving Up
Some people may think that relying upon Allah means doing nothing and simply waiting for results.
But true reliance does not mean abandoning the means.
Someone who wants to succeed in his work must work. Someone who wants to learn the Quran must study and practice. Someone who wants to achieve a permissible goal should make an effort to reach it.
The heart, however, remains dependent upon Allah and recognizes that guidance, success, and ability are ultimately from Him.
This is one of the beautiful meanings we can carry with us when saying “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
A Few Words With a Great Meaning
Islam offers many forms of remembrance. Some are very short, yet they fill a believer’s life with powerful reminders of faith.
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
These are not merely words to repeat without reflection. They remind us that Allah is the One with ultimate power, that the servant needs his Lord, and that every ability and success is from Allah’s grace.
The more we understand the meaning of a remembrance, the more meaningful its repetition becomes.
Do Not Let Remembrance Become Empty Words
It is beautiful for a Muslim to make remembrance a regular habit, but it is even better when the tongue and heart are connected.
When you say “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,” pause for a moment and remember its meaning.
Remember that you cannot remain steadfast in worship except through Allah’s help.
You cannot do good except through His guidance and permission.
You cannot overcome your weaknesses except through the strength He grants you.
And you cannot achieve what is truly good for you except by His permission.
In this way, remembrance becomes more than words on the tongue; it becomes a meaning that lives in the heart.
A Message for the Believing Heart
There are many things in life that we cannot control. But we can always return to Allah and ask Him for help and guidance.
We do not need long words to remember Allah.
Sometimes a few words are enough when the heart understands them and lives by their meaning.
“La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.”
It is a great remembrance and a treasure from the treasures of Paradise, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us.
