The Value of Words in a Muslim’s Life
Words are an important part of a person’s character. They can bring joy to someone’s heart, ease their sadness, or help resolve disagreements. On the other hand, words can hurt feelings, spread hostility, and damage relationships. Islam therefore teaches us to be mindful of what we say and to make our words a means of goodness and reconciliation.
The Qur’an’s Guidance on Good Speech
Allah, the Most High, says:
“And speak to people good [words].”
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:83.
This verse guides us to choose good words when dealing with others. Good speech is not limited to using pleasant expressions; it also includes honesty, fairness, respect, and avoiding mockery and humiliation.
| When Is Silence Better?
Not everything we know needs to be said, and not every disagreement requires an immediate response. Silence can be wise when speaking would increase anger or when we do not have enough information to judge a situation fairly.
Guarding the tongue also means avoiding the spread of unverified news, refusing to expose people’s faults to shame them, and staying away from backbiting and gossip. If our words hurt someone, we should try to make things right and apologize when appropriate.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Guidance on Speech
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
This hadith establishes an important principle for every Muslim: before speaking, ask whether the words are good, truthful, and beneficial, and whether the situation calls for them. Developing this habit helps refine our character and protects relationships from unnecessary harm.
| How Can We Train Ourselves to Guard Our Tongues?
We can begin with simple steps, such as pausing before responding in anger, verifying information before sharing it, and choosing words that preserve the dignity of others. It is also helpful to reflect on our speech at the end of each day, thanking Allah for the good we have said and repenting for our mistakes.
Guarding the tongue does not mean remaining silent in the face of injustice or abandoning sincere advice. Rather, it means speaking truthfully and wisely, choosing an appropriate manner, and avoiding harm and aggression.
Conclusion
Guarding the tongue is an act of worship reflected in a Muslim’s character and relationships. Let us make our words a source of mercy, a means of spreading goodness, and a way to reconcile hearts rather than wound them. A kind word may remain in someone’s heart for years, and a Muslim is accountable for their speech as well as their actions.
O Allah, guide us to the best of words and deeds, and protect us from their harmful forms.
